The documentary heritage and historical collections of the State Archives of Nuoro
The State Archives of Nuoro preserves documentary holdings of exceptional importance, extending over approximately two kilometres of shelving and documenting the activity of the State’s local administrative offices operating within the Province, from the pre-unification period to the second half of the twentieth century.
Alongside the collections produced by institutions such as the Prefecture and the Police Headquarters, particular significance is attributed to the notarial records, which include documents dating back to the sixteenth century. The oldest document preserved is in fact a notarial deed drafted in 1503, a valuable testimony to the administrative and social history of the territory.
The technical intervention: dust removal and elimination of biological deterioration agents
Within this context, our intervention involving the professional dust removal of archival material was carried out, an operation of great importance for maintaining proper conservation standards. The activity consisted of the controlled vacuum removal of atmospheric dust deposited on volumes and archival units, aimed at eliminating degradation and pollution agents — such as carbon particles, combustion residues, acidic substances, as well as fungal spores and biological traces — which may compromise the stability of paper and parchment materials and introduce potential entomological issues.
Professional methodologies for the protection and safety of archival materials
The dust removal process, carried out with high-efficiency professional equipment, was performed on site in order to minimise handling and potential stress related to the transportation of the materials. This targeted intervention was designed to safeguard cultural heritage, prevent the onset of biological attacks, ensure safer consultation of the documentary holdings by users, and improve the conservation conditions of storage environments.
