Camogli – Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta

Today, we are performing an anoxic disinfestation in the breathtaking setting of the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta in Camogli, a charming coastal town in Liguria.

Dating back to the 12th century, the basilica stands on what was once the ancient medieval island, the historic heart of Camogli, where the village’s political and religious life took place.
Inside, the vaulted ceilings and side chapels house important sculptural and pictorial artworks by renowned Genoese artists, including Nicolò Barabino and Francesco Semino. Andrea Casareggio crafted the main altar.

Due to its unique location right by the sea on the Ligurian coast, the church is subject to a humid indoor microclimate, which increases the risk of infestation and deterioration of the artworks.
The artwork undergoing treatment is the Assumption of the Virgin, a sculptural masterpiece by Bernardo Schiaffino created in the early 18th century.

We used the VELOXY® 1000 System, a nitrogen generator specifically configured to suit the basilica’s environmental conditions, to carry out the anoxic treatment. This noninvasive, eco-friendly method eliminates insects in all life stages while preserving the artwork’s integrity.
